Forever Haiti

Haiti is a part of who I am. I knew after I made my first trip in December of 2006 that I would never be the same; over 6 short days the people had forever changed my perspective on life. The 15 months I spent there from 2008 - 2009 proved to be the most emotionally draining, spiritually rewarding and personal growth period of my life. Don't believe me? Read just a few entries from my blog and you just might change your mind.

Like so many of you, my heart is aching for the Haitians. My hope is that Haiti-Aid.org will serve as a bit of hope in an other wise tragic situation; perhaps together we can create a miracle in the life of just one Haitian.

Please Support the Following Organizations:

Thank you for compassion and generosity for the people of Haiti.  Listed below are organizations with whom I have a direct relationship.  I know these people and trust the money you provide will go directly to the rebuilding of Haiti.

Visitation Hospital Foundation
(Healthcare)
http://www.visitationhospital.org/

During my time in Haiti, I served as the administrator for the Visitation Clinic in Petite Riviere de Nippes – a clinic founded and funded by the Foundation.  This organization also operates a guest house out of Port au Prince – the Matthew 25 House.  This guest house has turned into a makeshift clinic and soup kitchen as a result of the earthquake.
To donate to the Visitation Clinic, send a check to:

Visitation Hospital Foundation

Haiti Partners
(Education, Development)
www.haitipartners.org

Haiti Partners was founded by two men who have a deep passion and love for Haiti.  One of the principals – John Engle – was in Haiti when the  earthquake struck so he was already in a position to jump in wherever needed.

Haiti Partners disaster relief efforts are focused on:

1. Immediate: Emergency assistance to people who have lost everything in communities where Haiti partners work:  food, water, shelter, and basic assistance.

2. Mid-term: Working on transitional needs for education and other necessities.

3. Long-term: Helping the rebuilding effort in three communities of Marianman, Dabon, and Cite Soleil. We have schools, colleagues, and long-term relationships in these three areas. We will help with rebuilding, with education, and with other tremendous needs in these communities.

Beyond Borders
(Education)
www.beyondborders.net

Beyond Borders has been doing work directly in Haiti since 1993.   Initially their focus in Haiti was on directly funding literacy centers for children and adults. Beyond Borders has worked to improve the quality of education provided in these centers by promoting teacher training and more participatory program management, planning, and evaluation.

Beyond Borders is working around the clock to coordinate strategic interventions and facilitate collaboration between local organizations and international aid agencies in response to the earthquake.  Funds collected during phase 1 of their efforts will be used to get resources to those in need, such as transport for medical teams, purchase of critical supplies – medicine, food, satellite phones, mobile internet bases, excavation and clean-up tools, diesel fuel, etc.

As the initial crisis passes, Beyond Borders will use funds to support the recovery effort. We will assist our partners who have lost school buildings, homes, and offices. We will support education, teacher training, sustainable agriculture, and investments in rural livelihoods.

Health Empowering Haiti
(Healthcare, Education and Development)
http://www.heh.org/

Health Empowering Haiti (HEH) was founded by three individuals with experience living among, learning from, and serving the poor. Their sole focus is on empowering people by facilitating access to health through community-based programs of clinical services, education, and development.

I know one of the co-founders – Monica – personally. Her compassion for the Haitians is unparalleled. The earthquake struck late Tuesday afternoon and by Thursday morning, Monica was already on her way to Port au Prince and is working with local groups to assist in the relief effort.

To make a tax deductible donation to Health Empowering Haiti, please send a check to the address to:

Health Empowering Humanity
P.O. Box 300551

100% of your donation goes directly to operating costs, such as purchasing medications and supplies, as HEH continues to operate with the work of dedicated volunteers.

Holy Angels Hospice & Orphanage
(Orphanage)
http://www.holyangelshospice.org/

There are an unlimited number of orphanages operating in Port au Prince and throughout the countryside.  Holy Angels is, in my opinion, of the most special places in Haiti.  They are dedicated to helping the terminally ill children or those that have serious disabilities.  The love that the staff has for the children and the children have for each other is in a word overwhelming.

To donate to Holy Angels, send a check to:

Holy Angels Children Society
P.O. Box 2142
South Hampton, NJ 08088

Fonkoze
(Empowerment for Women, Development)

Fonkoze is “Haiti’s Alternative Bank for the Organized Poor.” It is the largest microfinance institution (MFI) in Haiti, serving more than 55,000 women borrowers, most of whom live and work in the countryside of Haiti, and more than 175,000 savers.

While living in Haiti, I worked closely with Fonkoze to implement educational classes for the women in our community.  These classes focused on empowerment of women as individuals and provide an unbelievable forum for women to express themselves and grow.

About Haiti-Aid.org

What’s this about.

We all know of the unprecedented tragedy in Haiti. Often in situations like this we feel helpless to know what to do or who to trust when making donations. Will it go where it’s needed most? Who can we trust?

My longtime colleague from ExactTarget, Karen Jung, recently returned from a 15 month sabbatical from ET. During her time away, she lived and worked among the Haitians, gaining firsthand knowledge of the difficulties of simple, everyday life. She also developed deep relationships with people who live and work in Haiti full time and it’s these relationships we want to leverage to aid those in need.

Karen is an amazing person who has an unbelievably compassionate heart coupled with a brilliant business mind. There is no one I would trust more to know exactly how to deploy charitable aid to help those who have been orphaned or suffered personal loss as a result of the recent earthquake.

In that light, Karen and I got together the day after this disaster and established Haiti-Aid.org. With the support of ExactTarget, Karen is able to focus energy on working with the contacts she has on the ground in Haiti to assess the situation and keep this community appraised of the unfiltered realities of the situation. With her guidance, we have assembled a list of charities that need your help today! You will not hear about these groups in the news or see any fundraising programs on television; but believe me when these are legitimate groups doing good in Haiti long before the earthquake as well as long after.

Karen Jung is unique in being part of our email & social media family but also having had extensive, personal experience and knowledge in Haiti. I ask each and every one of you to please hit the Donate Now button and give whatever you are comfortable with to the charity that most appeals to you. This is a situation where dimes and quarters matter.

We also ask for the support of the entire social media community to pass this site on and leverage what we all do best….quickly building a network of concerned marketers supporting this incredible cause.

About the Authors

Karen Jung
Karen Jung is a product marketing professional with ExactTarget, a leading global provider of on-demand email and one-to-one marketing solutions.

In 2008, Karen took a leave from ExactTarget to volunteer in Petite Riviere de Nippes, a small village about 60 miles west of Port au Prince.  During her 15 months there, she served as an administrator at US funded clinic and spent time working directly with the Haitians on broader community initiatives.

While in Haiti, Karen witnessed firsthand the devastating impact natural disasters take on Haiti, a country already ravaged by extreme poverty and little to no infrastructure to respond to events such as the January earthquake.  Her hope is that Haiti-Aid.org will serve as a conduit to funnel money directly to the people of Haiti – people that most likely never receive the level of assistance they need from all the aid flooding into the country.
